Fascinating Facts

The Otterhound’s origin isn’t exactly known. Most of the researchers believe that the Otterhounds came from France and was developed by carefully mixing Bloodhound, Terrier, Harrier and even Griffons. The name Otterhound came from a group of fishermen that used this breed to fend off and catch otters that are stealing their fish. Research shows that an Otterhound has accurate sense of smell that it could detect in the morning an otter that passed the night before. In the 20th century, the number of otters drastically dropped thus dropping the population of the Otterhounds as well. Fortunately in 1979, a dedicated group of dog breeders decided to preserve the Otterhounds. Although they are no longer listed in the endangered species list, the Otterhounds are still rare.

Physical Appearance

The Otterhounds grow for about 24 – 26 inches and weighs about 66 – 115 pounds.  They are large, brawny and very active hunting dog breed. It has a striking head, almost rectangular and furry body. Its head is narrow and its muzzle is as long as its skull. It also has wide nostrils and dark nose. The color of its eyes fairly complements the color of its coat – the ones with dark coats have black eyes and those with liver coats have hazel eyes.

Grooming

The fur or hair of the Otterhounds should be combed at least once a week to avoid matting. Its beard should be washed as frequent as its body fur. The Otterhounds have long fur and it should not be clipped in order to make it look natural.

Mood

The Otterhounds are brave and intelligent. They are also devoted to their families and packs especially to their master. Because of their active and hunting nature, they chase anything that moves especially non-canine animals. Sometimes, if you are strolling along a park with pond, they would instinctively swim on to it that’s why you should not let it roam unleashed.

With Children

The Otterhound’s devotion to its family is very ideal and advantageous to the children. They are also perfect playmates and could give more than enough time for the kids.

Training & Exercise

The Otterhounds are originally not kept as pets that’s why training them could be a little difficult. Food-reward training is highly suggested to motivate it more. The trainer/owner/handler should have a stronger and more determined character than the Otterhound because if it sensed that its master lacks character, it would certainly do things on its own.

The Otterhounds need daily exercise regimen on a safe area. Keep it leashed at all times to prevent it from running away from you especially if it picked up an interesting scent. There are some owners that allow their Otterhounds to swim at least once a week. They could run in a moderate pace that’s why they are also perfect jogging companions.

Health & Life Expectancy

The Otterhounds could live 10 – 12 years depending on how they are taken care of. There are cases where hip dysplasia was seen on Otterhounds. They are also susceptible on thrombocytopenia, bloat and hemophilia.
