Fascinating Facts
There are two varieties for land spaniels; the larger spaniels that is used for hunting large games and smaller spaniels that is used for hunting woodcock. The English Cocker spaniel belongs to the smaller spaniel and it was extremely famous in England until 18th century. In 1892, the two spaniel sizes were classified as separate breeds.
When the English Cocker spaniel was exported in America, the American breeders wanted to develop a breed that would fit their hunting needs – a matter which the English breeders objected. The English Cocker spaniel became extremely famous in Great Britain but it was overshadowed by the American Cocker spaniel in America. The English Cocker spaniel is also known as the “merry cocker” because of the dog’s constant wagging of its tail.
Physical Appearance
The English Cocker spaniel measures about 15 – 17 inches and weighs about 28 – 34 pounds. Its head is arched and appears to be flattened when viewed sideways. The color of the nose is dependent on the color of the coat; black nose for black coat and brown nose for liver coat. It has medium sized eyes with hazel or dark brown color. Its ears are hanging on both sides of the head and it is covered with wavy hair.
The color of the English Cocker spaniel’s coat is black, red or liver or tri-colored. In show rings, any solid color is permissible and white should only occur on the chest. In the United States, the tail of the English Cocker spaniel is usually docked or cut off but in some countries in Europe, docking the tail of an animal is considered illegal. Its feet are very cat-like with arched and tight toes.
Grooming
The English Cocker spaniel requires regular brushing and combing of its coat. There are different types of coats in this breed and the owner/trainer/handler should be careful on how to groom this breed. Bathe as deemed necessary.
Mood
The English Cocker spaniel is an outgoing, active, happy and intelligent dog. They bark a lot but they are happy to meet strangers if they socialized well since puppyhood. Without proper socialization training, they could become a little reserved and even scared to strangers.
With Children
This breed is merry and receptive especially with children. They are active and jolly and could play for long hours without showing signs of being tired. They are also affectionate and loving to children.
Training & Exercise
Training an English Cocker spaniel is not difficult; all it need is firm and gentle way of handling. They respond well to any kind of training. Food reward training is highly suggested to motivate the English Cocker spaniel.
Daily exercise is also important in the development of the English Cocker spaniel’s character. There are times that the Cocker display extreme destructive behavior and reserved attitude if they did not get enough exercise.
Health & Life Expectancy
The normal life expectancy for the English Cocker spaniel is about 12 – 15 years. This breed is highly susceptible to deafness and other ear infections. Ticks and burr could thrive on its ear especially during summer. In order to avoid this, check its ears regularly for ticks and burr. The English Cocker spaniel is also vulnerable to cataracts and familial nephropathy.
